Common Types of Pediatric Cancer

Children's cancer can be hard to identify early because of daily bumps and injuries or illnesses.
Leukemia cells
Leukemia: One of major cancer that affects children is leukemia which mainly affected the bone marrow and blood. It can be further categorized into two:
1. Acute lymphocytic leukemia
2. Acute myelogenous leukemia
Both these types of Leukemia are known to be aggressive in children and need immediate treatment.
Tumors in the Cerebral region and in the Central Nervous System: Brain tumors are the second leading cause of death cancer related death in children. Gliomas, astrocytomas, and neuroectodermal tumours are numerous forms of brain and CNS cancers that are defined by where the tumour started.
Burkitt Lymphoma
Lymphoma: Our lymphatic system is composed of organs, tissues, and vessels and functions in maintaining immunity and the circulatory process. Cancer that affects this system is called lymphoma. The main types of lymphoma are categorized into two:
1. Hodgkin's lymphoma: Associated with the presence of multinucleated Reed–Sternberg cells (RS cells) in lymph nodes of patients with this type of cancer, this cancer is caused by certain types of white blood cells called lymphocytes.
2. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: This type of cancer begins in white blood cells called lymphocytes. NHL is an umbrella term that covers many types of lymphoma that all share some of the same characteristics.
Neuroblastoma: Neuroblastomas are a kind of pediatric cancer that affects mostly newborns and toddlers. It can originate in any part of the body, although it is most often seen in the abdomen.
Bone cancers: It begins in the bones and includes pain in the bones, swelling, or a mass, which begins elsewhere but spread to the bones. Osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma are the two most frequent forms of bone cancer in pediatrics patients.

Root Cause ( if any)

It is not possible to pinpoint the underlying reasons why cancer occurs in children but there are always some risk factors associated with it
Genetic predispositions like DNA alterations that keep oncogenes active or suppress tumor suppressor genes can cause cancer.
Radiation exposure or heavy metal toxicity is another main reason for pediatric cancer.

Diagnosis

Physical Examination: There are some physical precursors like skin discoloration, swelling, and rashes. All the physical changes will be accompanied by some precursing symptoms.
Imaging tests: Chest X-rays, CT scans, PET scans, and MRI scans are used based on the localization of cancer in the young patient.
Sputum sample testing: Sputum can sometimes reveal the presence of cancer cells if the patient has an onset of cough and sputum.
Blood Test: The various types of cells in a person's blood are measured by routine blood testing. An excess or a deficiency of specific cells can signal the presence of particular forms of cancer.

Stages of Pediatric Tumors / Cancer

Pediatric cancer can be divided into four stage

Stage I

A minuscule tumor measuring less than 2 cm

Stage II

The tumor is very small but highly differentiated.

Stage IIII

The tumor has grown more aggressively and is now at a higher level.

Stage IV

This stage indicates that the cancer has spread to other organs and spread to the patient's extremities.

Treatment options (special focus on radiation therapy)

Surgical Intervention: The purpose of surgical intervention is to remove all of the cancer cells.
Radiation Therapy: High-energy beams, such as X-rays or proton beams, are used to target cancerous cells.
1. External beam radiation: External beam radiation refers to radiation carried by an energy beam that is circulating around your body as directed by a machine.
2. Brachytherapy: This method involves injected radiation into the body temporarily.
3. Intraoperative Radiation: Use of radiation beams during a cancer procedure.

Chemotherapy: Chemically destroying cancer cells. It involves taking drugs orally or via injection.
Immunotherapy: This is a form of chemotherapy that makes your body more resistant to fight cancer. A cancer cell produces a protein that blinds the disease-fighting cells of your immune system, which, in turn, may not attack the cancer. The goal of this treatment is to interfere with that process.
